Explore cable boxes and vertical cable-management parts for routing power and data cables through office desks and workstations. Start with the position of the power source and the equipment on each desk, then choose accessories that fit the desktop, frame and cable route. Leave enough access for future equipment changes.

An office wire management system organizes and supports power cords, charging cables and data cables around desks and workstations. It may include under-desk cable trays, metal wire boxes, vertical cable spines and fixing accessories. A properly planned system keeps cables away from the user’s legs and circulation areas while making future equipment changes easier.
A cable tray or wire box is normally installed horizontally beneath the desktop to hold power strips, adapters and excess cable. A cable spine routes cables vertically between the desk and the floor or nearby power source. Many workstations require both: the tray organizes connections under the desk, while the spine guides the main cable bundle safely toward the floor.
List the number and approximate diameter of all power and data cables, then include the dimensions of power strips and adapters that will sit inside the tray. Allow spare capacity for future devices instead of filling the tray completely from the beginning. The tray must also fit between the desk frame, beams and other accessories without reducing leg clearance.
Separating power and data cables is recommended where practical, particularly over longer parallel runs or in installations sensitive to signal interference. Separate compartments, cable paths or trays can help maintain organization and simplify maintenance. The final separation distance and routing method should follow the requirements of the electrical and network systems used in the project.
A height-adjustable desk needs a flexible cable spine or controlled cable loop that can move through the desk’s complete height range. The cables must have sufficient slack without hanging loosely, becoming stretched or entering the moving frame. Fixed cable trays can hold adapters under the desktop, while the vertical system guides the cable bundle toward the floor.
Yes, many cable trays and cable spines can be installed on existing desks if there is sufficient mounting space. Before installation, check the desktop material and thickness, frame position, nearby power source and the proposed cable route. Any drilling or adhesive fixing should be suitable for the furniture surface and must not damage electrical components or desk mechanisms.
Route cables through under-desk trays and vertical spines toward the nearest planned floor or wall connection. Avoid running loose cords across aisles, doorways or emergency routes. Where a floor crossing cannot be avoided, a suitable floor cable protector should be selected according to cable quantity, traffic level and local safety requirements.
Metal cable trays can provide durable support for power strips and adapters when correctly sized and securely installed. Electrical devices should not be tightly packed or covered in a way that prevents heat dissipation. Cable connections must remain accessible for inspection, and installation should comply with the power-strip manufacturer’s instructions and local electrical requirements.
Inspect the system periodically for loose fixings, damaged cable insulation, overloaded trays and cables caught in moving furniture parts. Remove unused cables and keep power adapters from accumulating dust or excessive heat. After desks, monitors or other equipment are relocated, check the full cable route again instead of simply adding more loose cables.
Provide the number and type of desks, required quantity, desk dimensions, frame structure, power-source location and approximate number of cables per workstation. State whether the desks are fixed-height or height-adjustable and whether power strips need to be housed inside the tray. Drawings or underside photos help M&W recommend compatible cable trays, wire boxes and vertical cable-management components.
