Explore lateral file cabinets in metal and melamine finishes for documents that need a dedicated storage location. Different drawer numbers and cabinet sizes suit different filing volumes. Before choosing, check the internal dimensions, the type of files you use and the space required to open each drawer.

A lateral filing cabinet is a wide office storage unit designed to hold files horizontally across the drawer or shelf. Its wide, relatively shallow format provides clear access to documents and allows the cabinet to be positioned along a wall, behind a workstation or inside a records area. Lateral files are commonly used for departmental documents, employee records and frequently accessed project files.
A lateral file is wider and stores documents side by side, making it suitable for larger shared filing volumes. A vertical file is narrower and deeper, with files arranged from front to back. A pedestal is a compact personal storage unit intended to fit under or beside a desk. The right choice depends on available floor space, filing volume and whether the storage is shared or assigned to one employee.
Selected lateral files can be configured for A4, Letter, Legal or other common document formats. Compatibility depends on the internal drawer width, depth and the direction of the hanging-file rails. Buyers should specify the file size and whether documents will be stored in folders, binders or hanging files before the internal configuration is confirmed.
Estimate the current volume of active and archived documents, then allow additional capacity for future records. Also consider how many departments will share the storage and how frequently the files are accessed. Measuring documents by linear filing length is usually more accurate than estimating by employee count alone. Less frequently used records can be stored separately from daily files to avoid occupying prime office space.
A lateral file should remain stable when a loaded drawer is extended. Depending on the model, safety features may include an interlock that limits how many drawers can open simultaneously, anti-tilt construction and provision for anchoring the cabinet. Heavy documents should be distributed evenly and stored in lower drawers first. The cabinet should always stand on a level surface.
Anchoring may be required for tall cabinets, heavily loaded units or products installed in locations with specific safety regulations. The fixing method depends on the cabinet design and the construction of the wall or floor. Buyers should confirm anchoring requirements during space planning rather than relying on furniture placement alone to prevent tipping.
Many lateral files use a central locking system that secures multiple drawers with one key. This is useful for controlling access to ordinary business documents, but lock type and key-management requirements should be confirmed for each project. Highly confidential or regulated records may require storage with a higher security or fire-resistance rating than a standard office filing cabinet.
Steel lateral files are often selected for high-use filing areas because of their durable structure and easy-to-maintain finish. Melamine-finished cabinets coordinate well with desks, credenzas and other office furniture, making them suitable for manager offices and client-facing areas. Selection should consider document weight, usage frequency, required finish and the surrounding office furniture.
The required clearance should include the fully extended drawer depth plus enough standing and circulation space for the user. Avoid placing the cabinet where an open drawer blocks a walkway, door or emergency route. For narrow offices, the cabinet position and drawer-opening direction should be checked on the floor plan before the model and depth are finalized.
Provide the required quantity, preferred material, cabinet dimensions, number of drawers, document format, filing direction, lock requirements, color or finish and delivery destination. For project orders, also share the floor plan, installation location, wall conditions and any anchoring or assembly requirements. This allows M&W to recommend a suitable configuration and calculate packaging and shipping more accurately.
